Ian is three!

Well, we're finally trying to get caught up on some posts we've been wanting to make! :) Big Brother Ian turned three on May 7th.

Everything went well at his three-year well-check. His current stats are:
Height: 39.75 in. (90th percentile)
Weight: 35 1/3 lb. (84th percentile)

Since he knows his letters, he was able to have his first-ever vision check. It was so cute to see him holding a wooden spoon-type cover over each eye and reading the line of letters. He passed with flying colors (though the poor kid will still most likely have to wear glasses someday as both Momma and Daddy had glasses by second grade!). Ian was able and willing to communicate happily with the doctor. She laughed and praised him when he randomly started telling her words that rhymed with each other.

What else is Ian up to as a three year old?
First off, he loves his little brother! He gives Ryan countless kisses throughout the day, likes holding Ryan, and wants to show Ryan all of his toys. He's very interested in watching all diaper changes from his "bumper car" (the seat of the exercise bike near where we change Ryan's diapers). Ian will almost daily request, "Tell me a story about Ian being a big brother." Ian is mostly gentle and patient with Ryan, though when Ryan cried in the car yesterday, Ian asked, "Why is he so loud??" Ian has been a big helper for Momma and asks cute questions like, "Would you like the Boppy pillow?" while running off to get it. Of course, he has his fair share of rough moments, too. It's hard to share Daddy and Momma's attention, and he'll often resort to acting like a baby himself or doing crazy/negative/loud antics or crying fits to get our attention. Daddy and Momma are learning the delicate balance between being sympathetic and ignoring the negative behavior. We continue to pray for God's wisdom as we all transition to being a family of four.

Ian continues to be quite the conversationalist. He loves asking questions like "How did you make this (food dish)?" or "Why is the moon out so early today?" He also is a master negotiator, asking for more minutes, more candy, etc. On most days, he impresses us with his use of good manners (though he still needs some reminders). He's learning about the give-and-take of conversation. At dinner many nights, he'll ask Daddy, "Where did you come from?," knowing that Matt will say that he was at school, so that he can ask the follow-up question, "What did you do at school today, Daddy?" Matt has at least 5 seconds to answer before Ian switches the subject to something else. :) Ian loves dictating our play, usually delegating various roles, like, "I'll be Curious George. You be the Man with the Yellow Hat." He also likes scripting compliments, suggesting things like, "Say, 'That's a good idea, Ian.'"

It's fun to see his sense of humor developing. He gets a characteristic twinkle in his eye before telling a joke (usually saying something incorrect -- like, "The dog said, 'moo.'"). And if we fail to notice his humor, he'll remind us, "Say, 'That was silly, Ian.'" One of his favorite jokes is to count to 30, saying at the end, "28, 29, 20-10," and then giggling like crazy.

Like many preschoolers, Ian thrives on consistency and routine. He was more than happy to tell our visiting family how things "should" be done. He'll tell Momma and Daddy, "You forgot to __" or "You did it wrong!" when we modify how things are normally done. And our once-timid little boy is still shy in unfamiliar situations but is getting braver when it comes to climbing!

Ian loves to "surprise" us by doing things on his own -- like turning out lights, going pee pee in the potty all by himself, or climbing into his car seat. He loves pretending. His current favorite game is pretending to be his friend Caleb so that he can go outside, ring the doorbell, and be greeted warmly as he enters the house.

He's gotten very interested lately in writing and drawing. He can write a few (easy) letters on his own -- X, T, I, H, O, and Q -- and is proud to be able to write the number 100. He's very curious about numbers and likes talking about combining groups together. Ian is getting to be a bigger fan of coloring and tries his best to stay within the lines and fill in the complete shape.

Some of Ian's favorite activities include operating the CD player, building with foam blocks, helping in the kitchen, singing songs from Sunday school or story time (though only at home), spending TONS of time in the sandbox, reading books and magazines, watching videos (like Curious George, Thomas, and Superwhy) on Netflix, squirting things with his spray bottle, and playing board games (like Go Fish, Hullabaloo, or Cootie). He also likes ice cream, fruit, fruit snacks, having Parmesan cheese sprinkled on everything, wheel noodles, his beloved puppy, a long yellow string he calls his "hay bale," bubbles, our neighborhood kiddie pool, and his fireman boots.

We love our three-year-old!

Here's how we spent his third birthday ...

Ian helped Momma make some pancake batter.
Thanks to a good idea from cousin Marcie, Ian "painted" his pancakes with food coloring and milk ...
... and then blew out three candles!
We played dress up with Momma's shoes and Daddy's socks (note the "hay bale" on the floor).
Then we played a fun game from Uncle Jason and Aunt Amy called Hullabaloo.
We made a sign for Grammy and Papa who were coming to visit later in the day. (Note the few letters that are completely filled in with marker.) Ian's favorite part was gluing on sequins and pom-poms to decorate.
We had a scavenger hunt that led to Jello Jigglers for lunch.
And of course, we had to put birthday candles in his PB&J sandwich at lunchtime.
After a rest, we blew some cool colored bubbles called Zubbles from Uncle Andrew and Aunt Sarah.
Soon, Grammy and Papa arrived from New Mexico and helped us blow more bubbles.

We also roped them into playing more Hullabaloo.

Grammy and Papa taught Ian how to "take a bow" when he won the game.
Grammy read Ian some magazine stories ...
... and helped him open some birthday cards from kind friends and family. (He also received many nice phone calls from family members as well as friends Caleb and Melissa. Thanks for being so thoughtful!)
We had one of Ian's favorite meals -- spaghetti with wheel noodles, green beans, and fruit salad,
with brownies for dessert.
We played with some of Ian's other gifts in the days that followed -- including the Elefun game from Momma and Daddy. (Catching the butterflies is still a little tough!)
The Stomp Rocket from Uncle Andrew and Aunt Sarah has been a big hit and has even encouraged Ian to learn to jump a little higher so the rocket launches even higher!

What a fun birthday! :)
